When I saw Zest’s call for submissions, I searched through my drafts and stumbled upon The Six-Twenty, a piece I wrote at ShowMeYourLits, which sponsors a weekly, ninety-minute flash challenge. The prompt that inspired the story was a photograph of a swing set in the evening. No children were in the photo. The lighting and emptiness evoked melancholy.
I thought the piece fit Zest’s theme of ‘beginning’ or ‘fresh start,’ at least in a tentative way. I think Abbey is making a new beginning, though the exact nature is as yet unclear.
